Ah! My new puppy is crazy! What do I do?! - First Week At Home

Updated: Mar 31, 2023

Tired of yelling to control your new puppy? You're not alone! Well, if you’re anything like me, you have had only had your puppy for about a week, and you can be completely overwhelmed at times! Trying to prepare for a new puppy or going through the same thing I am? Follow along with this post and let’s talk in detail about how to control your sweet and sometimes overwhelming ball of puppy fur!

1. Work on avoiding trouble rather than correcting it.

Take away the distractions. If they keep chewing the cords, remove them. Learn to redirect instead of strictly punishing. While ‘No’ is a word that may often need to be used, try to engage in training daily where you puppy gets lots of praise and friendly cuddles. Ensure your puppy is never left alone. If you have to leave them or need some time away, put them in a safe space, which brings me to my next point.

2. Buy a crate… seriously.

Use it during the day, in the evening, when they’re uncontrollable, throughout the night, any anytime you need It will solve so many problems. Sure, it’s difficult in the first few days, especially if they have never been alone and they experience bouts of separation anxiety. However, consider this: crating your dog will make them easier to potty-train and more self-sufficient. Make it easier by feeding them in their crate, providing water only in their crate, and encouraging/praising the moments of silence.

3. Work on new things daily!

My puppy seems unsure if she is doing the right thing. Sometimes, I show her a new trick and it takes her a few tries to get it. Now, she sits every time she looks at me for new commands. Remember, this is new for them just as it is new for you. Enjoy your new puppy and be kind when things don’t work out right away as they are learning too.

Remember that puppies are energetic and curious by nature, and it takes time and patience to train them. This too shall pass.
