If you have come across this blog, it is likely that you have questions because you have recently learned about or have recently been introduced to the Portuguese Water Dog. This friendly breed is unique and truly remarkable, love their owners, and just begs to be loved completely. These tremendous dogs deserve special recognition for their history, development, and somewhat recent acceptance by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
Recognized in 1983, the Portuguese Water Dog once lived all along Portugal’s coast, and was used to herd fish into nets, retrieve lost tackle, and act as a messenger between ships and shore. Fishermen counted on the strong and muscular dogs to be hardworking and seaworthy. They would ride in trawlers from the warm Atlantic waters of Portugal to the freezing cold waters off the coast of Iceland (American Kennel Club, 2022). These amazing dogs lived helpful lives and almost went extinct after technology took over their jobs. The Portuguese Water Dog Club was founded in the seventy’s which could have been the reason for AKC to begin to recognize this amazing breed.
On the AOK website, ‘Porties’ are described as ‘athletic, adventurous, and athletic’ (American Kennel Club, 2022). They are great with children and are amazing family dogs. Loyal to their owner and fun to train, they are eager to please and can be taught new tricks easily. Extremely playful and often protective of their family, Porties can warm up to anyone who enters the home. They are a medium size dog that can range from 35 to 50 pounds and get up to twenty-one inches in height.
At one time, almost having gone extinct, these amazing dogs have made a comeback and there is a reason that may not be obvious to those who have never met a Portie.
