Rewarding During Food Time – Finding a Release Word

It’s rewarding to have a well-trained dog and an owner can start from the first time they feed their puppy. Teaching your dog to sit and wait for your command is a rewarding experience for those dog and owner because it displays a boundary of mutual respect. For example, teaching your dog how to sit and wait before you release them, the dog feels like they respect you and earn their food while the owner feels respected and honored by their dog. This simple, yet rewarding behavior is easy to teach and fun to maintain.

Teaching your dog to sit and wait is as simple as taking the motivation away. Next time you feed your dog and they charge their food bowl, simply lift it off the ground until they back up or calm down. Again, try and place it on the ground and if they charge, again, remove the bowl. Wait until they sit and wait for you to place it on the ground and then give your release command. Personally, I use ‘yes’.

When your dog eats, use this method to teach them to wait for your command. As they get the hang of the idea that they must wait until you put the food on the ground, make them sit and wait longer in order to hear the release command, causing them to sit patiently for longer periods of time. Over time, they will come accustomed to their new routine and will happily wait for their release.

Dogs are kind and loving creatures, eager to please and being jumped on every time you put down your food bowl is no fun! Try this easy trick next time you give your dog a meal and check out my blog for more information about how to care for your furry loved-one.
