Uh-oh! Gotta go! - Potty-training

Updated: Mar 31, 2023

Potty training is the first and most basic thing the puppy owners need to know. Some people claim to train their puppy in one day and while I guess it could be possible, it can definitely be done in under a week.

The first step will be to put in place some restrictions for you puppy. Make sure you have an area sectioned off for your new puppy and ensure they cannot get out. We have our new puppy in the kitchen and have two walk through gates in both of the doorways so she cannot get out.

Second, either keep an eye on them every second, or put them in their crate. It’s a stereotype that puppies potty the second you take your eyes off of them. In my experience, this is true! It’s hard to catch them in the act to correct the behavior if you are not actively paying attention. When you take them out of their crate, immediately take them outside and set them down to go potty.

Lastly, if they are going potty in the house, then you are not taking them outside enough. Keep repeating often ‘go potty outside’ when you pick them up to take them outside. When they go potty outside, get so excited and say ‘good potty’ repetitively. When you take them outside, tell them ‘outside’. The more you can repeat these phrases, the more it has the likelihood to click in their little puppy brains.

Overall, control and repetition are the main contributors to success when potty training. Keep putting your puppy outside and endure they have safe places to be alone. It can be difficult when you think you have gotten it, and there is a mistake, but just be kind when that does happen, and it will!
